On Friday April 10th, 2015, sophomores Megan Burke and Kathleen McShane participated in the 68th annual Student Government Day at the Massachusetts State House. The students were assigned roles as legislators and had the opportunity to replicate the activities of real state legislators discussing bills under consideration by the State House of Representatives.
Through simulated committee and public hearings, Megan and Kathleen were given the chance to learn first hand about the legislative process and state government. House formal sessions provided the students insight on how ideas become laws.
While in the House chamber, the students heard from Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo , Senate President Stan Rosenberg and several other political dignitaries. The students also had a photo op with state representative Carolyn Dykema, who represents Holliston. Representative Dykema then spent time with the students, sharing her experiences as a state legislator. Megan and Kathleen represented Holliston High School as elected members of the school’s Student Advisory Council.
